Excuses

Alright..It is now January 11th.  How many of us have fallen of our goals already?  I know in the past 4-5 days that I have.

What are your Excuses?  The weather?   My job?   The kids?  I don't feel well?  I just don't have the time!  Well these are some of mine also.  But what does it really mean? .  They are excuses.  Websters offers a definition as:

an explanation offered as a reason for being excused1. to regard or judge with forgiveness or indulgence; pardon or forgive; overlook (a fault, error, etc.): 2. to offer an apology for; seek to remove the blame of:  3. to serve as an apology or justification for; justify: .4. to release from an obligation or duty

Ok, now that we understand what it is.  Lets do something about it.   One thing we can do is to be creative.  We all have to juggle time so he have to find it.  Example:  Today I had to take the car into Firestone to be worked on which is two miles away.  I could have waited the 2-3 hours  for it.  But I dressed correctly and jogged the 20-25 mins home.  I had every excuse to stay there and read a book: (it is 20 degress out,  I don't want to jog back., The car wont take that long at the shop,  etc.)  I sucked it up  zipped up my running jacket and jogged the 20 mins back home.  I was creative.  I made time.  On top of it I will eventually get in a 4 mile run.   2 miles there and two miles back .  I also picked up and extra hour and twenty mins to two hours in my day by not cooling my heels in the service shop.

I admit it I was lazy the past 4 days.  I did not work out.  I did not feel well.  I did not like the cold.  I did not want to run in the snow.  It is OK.  You do not have to let your entire goal of better health be side lined because you fell off the wagon for a week..  Get up. Dust yourself off and find a way to fix it.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Roll yourself out of bed 15 min earlier and do some exercises.  Take the kids sled riding.  Go with them,  don't just drop them off.  They will actually have fun with you.  If you are creative and find the time to workout and do something for yourself,  I gaurantee you will feel better about yourself.

It is worth it!

Weight loss and The Power of the Written Word.

When asked: "What one thing helped me to loose the weight most?" It is easy.

Food Diary!

When I started with my trainer, he asked me to do a food diary. I was too write down everything that I put into my mouth and when. I also had to track my exercise for the day and what I was feeling. I had to email it to him at the end of every day he would comment on it and send it back the next day.

Easy right? NO!

First of all I had no idea how little I knew about food and nutrition. Also try to remember every thing you put in your mouth. Everything! Try it! What did you eat yesterday? New Years Eve? Every taste. Every Sip of water. When you did it and how much. Why did you put it in your mouth? What was the benefit too you for eating of drinking what you did? How did or how will it effect you? How did it make you feel. Did you need to do it? How many ounces of water did you drink? Did you exercise? When and how long?

Even if you are not as lucky or you don't want to pay someone to comment on what you eat. The benefit of writing down every thing you eat and drink is crucial to loosing weight and more importantly getting healthy. I think you will find that it is hard to do. It will make you to start to think about that half ounce lick of peanut butter off the end of the butter knife making your child's lunch. It counts! For me I also started to think how my trainer was going to comment on what I ate. Because he held me accountable for what I ate. He would explain the good and the bad. He would answer all of the questions above. The information I gained was invaluable.

Doing a Food Diary is not just a way to loose weight. It is a lifestyle change. You will start to see the patterns, making it easier to pinpoint your problem areas. You also have to do it for at least 30 days. Everyday. Make it a habit. You will find that you will go back and read what you did. You will make mistakes. You will cheat. Its OK. But you will see it. The diary will help you get back on track. You will train your brain to think about what you are putting into your mouth and why. It will become second nature.

As I said, you do not have to pay money to do this. But for me the benefit was that I needed the discipline. I needed someone to ask me why I didn't do my diary for Thursday (the New Years Eve party were I drank and ate too much)? lol. Also the knowledge I gained was incredible. I would suggest doing it with someone like I did. You can connect with my trainer by cliciking on the Love Street Living Foods Link on my page. He even has free information for you, But even if you don't, you will see a huge change in your life even if you do it on your own.

New Path

As many of you know. I have not been having the easiest time, I was layed off from South Hilla Honda. The car industry is not an easy industry to be in right now. After 15+ plus years as a finance manager I am having trouble with what I am going to do. I know I can go back into the car industry. I am not sure that I want to to go back. There is a reason the car industry has a lower level of respect than DUI attorneys. (inside joke) not really funny. There are multiple reason why we gain weight. Most of the reasons are because we are trying to bury life situations.. I am now in the best shapeof my life and I feel I have a hadel on the food. Now I am going to tackel the soul. You are not a complete person with out all levels. I think the soul will be the hardest.

Is it worth going Organic?

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. The more I read about food processing in our great country, the lessI want to eat. I know there are some of you out there saying "come on Larry!"

Would you pull grapes out of your fridge, spray them with Raid, let them sit for an hour, rinse them off with water, then feed them to your kid? I didn't think so.

That is basically what we are doing when we purchase something that we don't know the background of.

Does it cost more? Yes. But like anything in this country with supply and demand, and competition for your dollar. The more people ask for something, companies will start making more and the price will start coming down. They do not want to loose you as a customer. Just think about the last few years and how many more Organic items are available.

My opinion....It is worth it.

Why I started with a personal trainer and the results.

Being in sales for the past 20+ years I attended a lot of sales training classes. I remembered in one sales training that the instructor told the class that one of the things any good sales person should do is to higher a personal trainer. I thought to myself "what the hell is he talking about?" He stated that a personal trainer could focus you in the right direction. Point out what needs to be done. Win the results you are looking for. Making you feel better about yourself. He stated the positive energy you will develop is visible and the customer could feel it. Being physically fit that you were better able to deal with the stresses of sales.

I guess this stuck in the filter of my brain. So I started looking around. The new LA Fitness club was opening. Amerifit was down the street. Extreme Fitness was close. So I visited and all I got were high pressure sales pitches. This is not right I said to myself and I tend to go with my gut. I really had no idea of where to start. I knew this wasn't the right path. So I Googled personal trainers in Pittsburgh

That is when I found an add on Craigs List. His name was Jon-Michael Kerestes. Odd name. Interesting credentials. US Olympic Training center Judo team member and third degree black belt. NCAA collegiate wrestler, graduate of The US Air force Academy and promoted to Captain, Owner of Love Street Living Foods (Raw, Organic food company, 15 years nutritional experience.

I called and set up a meeting. Before we meet he asked that I be open and coachable.

At fist I was sceptical. He did this out of his home. No expensive equipment. He wasn't some muscle bound body builder. No fancy work out clothes. How good could he be? What do I have to loose? An hour of my time and some cash. How hard could this be?

First of all he was very professional. He asked very direct questions and listened to the answers. When we started I was shocked at how out of shape he showed me that I was. He gave very direct constructive instruction. No games here. He's not going to pamper you. He finds your weakness' and works on them. I could not believe it, but I didn't make it the full hour. I thought I was going to puke, and I almost did.

When I was done, he told me he would like me to do a food diary and email him everything I ate, and when, how much water, and what kinda of exercise. he would correct it and send it back the next day and that we would be talking about it more during the next session. I will do a separate post on the food diary.

He doesn't mess around he is serious about what he does and he is good at it. The weight started drooping off me. The first week I lost 10 pounds! In 12 weeks I lost 42 pounds! People were noticing. Asking what I was doing. I was embarrassed to say I hired a personal trainer. I even took a lot you jabs from friends, family, and coworkers. My wife even thought it was a joke at first. But when she saw the results. She started going herself and has lost 50 lbs. I am happy I stuck with it. If you want to contact him:

How I got motivated

Roll back too Sept. 2008. I have reached an all time high in my true weight of 230lbs. I keep telling people I am 224. I am within weeks of my 43'd birthday. I am now officially the typical overweight middle aged American male. I work too many hours. I sit at a desk for hours. I eat the wrong foods. I don't exercise. I have to get this under control.

What really triggered it for me was one evening my wife and I were watching an episode of "The Biggest Looser" were the doctor went over the client's health with them and even showed them their internal body fat. I never really thought about it. But the fat is all through our bodies. Not just under the skin. It was gross and I was quickly gaining more and more weight. That was the trigger. Something went off inside of me. That is when I started looking for an answer.
